Contracts for the Needlearts Industry: Understanding the Basics

Presented by Danielle Chalson, J.D.

Like all industries, the needlearts industry is filled with contracts. Whether you're a teacher, a designer or an editor, a publisher or a photographer, a craft store or a manufacturer, contracts affect us all.  They form the basis of our most important business relationships.  But they don't always make sense!  Have you ever wondered what the terms in your contracts mean?  Have you ever wanted to negotiate or amend those terms?

In this introductory webinar, you will learn about some of the most common contract terms and how they might impact your brand and your business. You will also explore how contract terms might be amended. The goal of this webinar is not only to encourage you to read your business contracts more closely, but also to empower you to create contracts that you can understand and that work for you and your business.

Know Your Product: How the Yarn Manufacturing Process Impacts You

Presented by Robert Weintraub, Maine Top Mills L3C

If you spend your entire day working in the fiber arts industry, you may think you know everything you need about yarn, but there’s more to yarn than just weight, fiber and yardage. Join Robert Weintraub for a deep dive into how yarn is manufactured, and what this means for the finished product. This webinar will cover the key characteristics of yarn and how they are impacted by the manufacturing process, including fiber blending, tensioning, plying and more.

You will walk away with a better understanding of:

  • Why the same yarn behaves differently when it’s used for weaving vs. knitting
  • Why blended fiber yarns don’t always have the characteristics you expect
  • How the manufacturing process impacts the drape, feel and sturdiness of finished pieces.
  • The difference between large commercial and custom-produced yarns

There will also be time for Q&A, so bring your questions, or examples of when a yarn didn’t behave the way you thought it would, and discuss it with our experts and other members!

Building Better Business Series: Working with Teachers

Presented by Edie Eckman

One of the best ways to draw attention to the products and services you offer is to bring in an expert teacher!  Whether you’re hiring a nationally known superstar, or sourcing from your local talent pool, the right teacher can be a huge asset to your shop, organization or publication. Good teachers can enhance your credibility, arm your customers with confidence, and increase your sales, but only if you utilize them in smart ways. So, how do you know you’re hiring the right teacher, and promoting them the right way?

Join renowned teacher, author and design Edie Eckman as she outlines:

  • Key questions to ask before you hire a teacher
  • How to promote your teachers (and get them to promote you!)
  • And how to structure your teaching agreements.

Participants will leave this webinar with the ability to identify opportunities to bring in a teacher to support sales and growth, and to turn those opportunities into successful programs. Attendees will also have the opportunity to engage with Edie in an open Q&A, so bring your questions!

Audience: This class will use examples of both in-person and online teaching situations, and will be applicable to retailers and their employees, wholesalers, publications and other needlearts professionals.
